Illinois Teacher REFUSES to Leave Disabled Student Behind From Class Trip

An Illinois teacher known as “Ms. Helma” ensured that 10-year-old Maggie Vazquez, who has cerebral palsy, could participate in a two-day hiking trip. Ms. Helma’s commitment involved physically carrying Maggie, making the experience inclusive and memorable.

When the trip to Camp Sullivan presented logistical challenges for Maggie, Ms. Helma turned to social media and discovered a carrier called the Freeloader, suitable for taller children like Maggie. She purchased the $300 carrier, enabling Maggie to join her classmates and school staff from May 30 to June 1.

Despite the tough terrain, Ms. Helma was inspired by Maggie’s resilience and joy. Maggie’s mother, Michelle Vazquez, praised the teacher for her exceptional effort. The school’s executive director, Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, described Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination.”
