Black Canada Lynx caught on camera for the first time

A groundbreaking event occurred in 2022 when a black-furred Canada Lynx, a distinctive North American species primarily seen in light brownish-grey fur, was photographed and videoed for the first time. A researcher from the University of Alberta captured the elusive creature on camera, while a Government of Yukon employee recorded it on a cellphone near Whitehorse, Yukon.

This remarkable discovery was documented in a scientific article titled “Paint it black: first record of melanism in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis).”

Most Canada Lynx share similar fur coloring, changing with seasons. The black-furred lynx in the video represents an exceptionally rare coat color variation. Such variations can be adaptive or maladaptive in evolution, but for this lynx, its dark coat might disrupt camouflage during winter hunting trips.

This recording marks a significant moment in wildlife documentation, underlining the importance of ongoing research into species’ adaptations and the potential evolutionary impact of such traits.
